CANCER research is the driving force behind a 73-year-old former Taranaki man’s attempt to walk around England.

Two years after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, Dave Wilson got the all clear from his oncologist and began looking for a way to give back to the team who treated him.

After careful planning and preparation, Mr Wilson laced up his walking shoes and hit the road to raise money for cancer research.

Since leaving Brighton on England’s south coast on May 10, Mr Wilson has walked an average of 25 kilometres a day, six days a week and has raised more than $10,000. “I’ve walked through 26 counties, travelled 2735 pedometer kilometres and over 2414 road kilometres,” Mr Wilson said via email.

“My last walk will be a marathon distance walk of 42 kilometres.”

Mr Wilson hopes to finish the 3000km walk on October 10 and expects 70 supporters to join him for the final 16km walk back into Brighton.

On Sunday, Mr Wilson was in Dawlish, Devon, 280km east of Brighton.

Originally from England, Mr Wilson spent most of his adult life in New Zealand and many years in New Plymouth where he and his wife established the Margaret Elizabeth Rest Home.

Mr Wilson returned to England 15 years ago but makes regular trips back to New Zealand to visit family and friends.

In preparation for his fundraising walk, Mr Wilson spent the last UK winter in New Zealand and Australia, walking 25-35km a day.

“The sponsorship interest I’ve had from these two countries inspired me to arrange links
embroidered patches with the Australian Cancer Research and the Malaghan Institute of New Zealand,” Mr Wilson said.

“This means their sponsorship funds go directly to the their respective cancer research foundations.”
