Sporting Lisbon 3
Everton 0
(Sporting win 4-2 on aggregate)
EVERTON held firm for more than an hour in Lisbon last night before their European dream was buried by a late avalanche of Sporting goals.
Defending a precarious 2-1 lead from the first leg at Goodison, David Moyes men were on course for a last-16 clash with Atletico Madrid until a Miguel Veloso strike on 64 minutes ended their resistance. Former Ranger Pedro Mendes added a second, with a deflected longrange shot 13 minutes later, before substitute Matias Fernandez added a third in injury time.
The result may have been a big improvement on Everton’s last visit to the Portuguese capital four months ago when they were thrashed 5-0 by Benfica, but that will be of little consolation to Moyes and his players. Joao Moutinho, a transfer target for Moyes not so long ago, went closest to an opening goal in the first half when Prada Replica Handbags Philippe Senderos was penalised for fouling Yannick Djalo on the edge of the area.
His free-kick over the Everton wall came back off the bar. Senderos links of london did manage to put the ball in the net with Everton’s first sight of goal two minutes from the end of a one-sided first half, but he was well offside. Tim Howard produced a fantastic save double save on the hour, to deny Marat Izmailov and Veloso, before the latter finally beat the keeper despite a late challenge from Phil Neville. Mendes doubled the lead, while Fernandez struck on the counter attack in added time.
